Shades of Easter...

Who doesn't love the beautiful shades of Easter? From soft pastels in blues and pink to more vibrant shades of yellows and purples...and the grass green that signifies spring is truly here... the return of colour fairly shouts its arrival after a season of cold and white.

Sophie and I decorated eggs with friends today and it was so nice to throw open the windows and let in the warm, spring air while we dipped our eggs into pots of colour.

The little girls squirmed as they emptied the eggs of their yolks..."Ewww...so gross!!"

In the afternoon, I cleared out my closet of most of my winter clothes. The sorry pile of sweaters and pants looked like an Ode to Black, and I vowed to make a few purchases next year that have a bit more colour.

I dug the children's Easter baskets out and lined them with pretty paper grass in preparation for some good Cadbury chocolate and fun spring trinkets. I treated myself to some spring flowers for my table and snuck a few little chocolate eggs, just to be sure they are as delicious as they look...

I hope everyone has wonderful weekend and I wish you and your families a wonderful Easter!

Easter...in photos

It was a good Easter. Everything about it. Some of my family came to visit, and I am worn out tired... but filled up inside from their company, good laughs, good food, and a healthy serving of chocolate.

Back to regular programming on Tuesday, but for now, I share my Easter in photos. Stick around if you like!

I hope you and yours had a wonderful Easter, too.

Easter Goodies

You have to love Better Homes and Gardens, and all of the wonderful inspiration they provide!Check out these little nests...and you know I love a good nest with some blue eggs... I even have one of those cupcake holders, so I think this masterpiece just might make it onto my Easter table this year.

In fact, the image below reminded me that I picked up some vintage Easter post cards that I would love to display. I even found the perfect way to do so over at Sarah's blog. I have a card holder that I only put to use at Christmas time, but a little spray paint might be the perfect trick to make it multi -purpose! It's just about that time to make some new spray paint spots on my hideous gravel drive-way. I have more than a few projects in mind!

This charming dress (below) is from Garnet Hill. Although I already have Sophie's Easter dress, I love the whimsy and charm of this one and can just picture it on a little girl with bare legs, running through the grass to find hidden Easter eggs. I'm dreaming again, as Sophie is more likely to be wearing rubber boots and mittens as she hunts for hers!!

Speaking of Easter eggs, I have a bone to pick with the makers of Cadbury chocolate! I have searched far and wide for their large Cadbury Easter eggs, with little bags of cream eggs (or any kind of eggs) tucked inside. To no avail. Am I to presume they no longer make their larger eggs? It was bad enough when they stopped selling their large-ish Easter rabbits! Is nothing sacred? What kind of bunny/egg am I supposed to put in their baskets now? A Lindt bunny? I don't think so...at $7.99 for a small, hollow bunny...well, that is just silly! Good chocolate is serious business in my house.

What about you, what do you put in your children's Easter baskets? Does the Easter bunny bring Cadbury chocolate to you and yours?

Easterly Winds Blowing Through...

After the stop/start of our spring this year, I have been less than inspired to decorate for spring this year. While the softer colours throughout my home supports the pastels of Easter, I have found myself to be quite resistant to bringing out my decorations when snow still carpets the landscape around me. In fact, it feels a bit silly to think flowers and chicks when nothing is there to support their survival...
Enter my eight year old daughter. She cares not about my seasonal reservations; in fact, she fairly insists on scattering eggs and displaying bunnies throughout the corners of our home. Who am I to argue? So, on Friday I half-heartedly decorated for Easter, and I must admit - a little Easter goes a long way to inspire feelings of spring. Now, let's hope it is enough good karma to keep the persistent snow at bay...!!!

What about you? Do you decorate for Easter??

The perfect Easter...with Matthew Mead

Nobody does it better, that's just the way it is...at least from a decorative standpoint!! I was perusing Matthew Mead's archives over at his website, and found myself drooling over his Spring 2007 offerings, drenched in the most lovely shades of robin's egg blue and , quite fittingly, chocolate brown. The way those two shades complement each other is perfection, and so pleasing to the eye...not to mention how the chocolate bunnies make me feel like delving into my children's Easter baskets and nipping a few eggs from them!

One can only imagine how lovely the Easter baskets Matthew and his wife likely created for their children when they were small. If they looked half as appealing as the Easter offerings on his website, they were lucky children, indeed!! Then again, do kids ever notice anything like that when chocolate is melting between their fingers and trickling out from the corners of their mouths?? I doubt it...and thus there is hope for the rest of us mere mortals...unless you have raised chocolate snobs like me!!

Don't you just love the blue jelly beans in the glasses??

Tea party, crafting, and Martha overload!!

I am spent, at least from a mothering point of view. Today, the first day of spring, I awoke to the sound of the radio announcing that school was cancelled due to the impending freezing rain due our way. Yay!! Spring!! Grrrr...

After putting my head under my pillow and wailing (I'm kidding, of course...), I somehow summoned up a little bit of Martha's (of the Stewart variety) energy. After fixing my family a big, hearty breakfast (hoping it would make them forgo the need for lunch......it did not...), I decided to be a good, creative mother and let my daughter have a friend over to make some Easter crafts. This is where it gets weird: I even decided to bake with my daughter and youngest son. Anyone who knows me, knows I don't bake all that often, and certainly not on the same day as a "crafty day"!! Like I said, Martha's soul invaded my body somehow while I was asleep!
Anyway, we made sugar cookies to go with the teapot full of hot chocolate my son decided to make, so that he and his little sister could have some "on tap" at their ready. That is also when the non-baker in me reared her ugly head. I relized, after more carefully reading the recipe, that sugar cookie dough needs to be chilled for at least two hours!! Umm yeah...I knew that!! Sooo, instead of having a real tea party, my daughter and her friend had a "pretend tea party" in her room, which actually was a lot less messy than the real thing! A pleasant side effect to my stupidity...! I did come through on the craft activity, though. Who better to check for classy craft ideas than Martha herself? Indeed, after a bit of looking through her archives I found what turned out to be the sweetest/easiest craft:
They then made some "art" using some scrapbooking papers I have and some cheap frames that made them feel very important! Isn't she (oops, I mean it!) adorable??!!
After finally getting all the cookies baked (and burning the last batch...unfortunately, I don't mind burnt cookies), making supper and cleaning up with less than adequate help, I felt Martha slip from my body and the old me return. My daughter, figuring she was on a roll, thought I might like to "colour Easter pictures" with her. Stifling the urge to scream and break free from the day's domesticity, I simply looked at her and said (in a calm voice): "Martha has left the building!" She looked at me with complete puzzlement on her face. However, she had the good sense to simply shrug her shoulders and say,"Mummy, you're soooo silly!!"

**After my daughter's less than stellar tea party, I discovered that Risa, over at the Partea Planner, is encouraging other bloggers to host their own tea parties. I am not sure what that entails, and I am pretty sure my tea party is not what a party planner extraordinaire like herself had in mind, but I added her link and encourage you to all head on over and check out what a real tea party looks like. Be sure to go through her archives, as this is one talented lady. The parties she plans are out of this world!!

The perfect Easter basket...

As a child, I always dreamed of waking up to a beautiful Easter basket, filled with a pink bunny, delicate chocolate eggs and bunny peeking out of paper Easter grass. Some of my friends were "spoiled" (to me) enough to have been given a pretty new dress and shoes, and headed off to church in their Easter finery, with jelly beans still stuck in their teeth. Now, I know that is not what Easter is all about, but I still wanted that perfect Easter basket anyway... Sophie and her cousin Sarah, dressed in their Easter finery...

I grew up in a house with six children. There was not the money for such luxuries; and although my sweet mum always created a lovely Christmas for us, other holidays usually slipped by without a lot of fuss. Often, we would get one of those chocolate bunnies in the plastic bag (usually for $1.44) and, if we were in Zellers when the lady who wrote your name on the 88 cent eggs was there, we would cue in line to get our names "painted" on in a sickly-sweet, white icing. As a child, I was never a huge fan of chocolate, especially the "cheap" kind as my sister and I call it. We were indeed chocolate snobs, she a fan of rich, dark chocolate...me, solely a fan of Cadbury's milk chocolate. You see, our dear Auntie Jean and Uncle Jimmy had spoiled us for the good stuff by bringing us over chocolate from Ireland (our birthplace). They would bring large boxes of Cadbury Flake bars and dole them out equally between all of us children. For our mother, they would bring her beloved Fry's Cream bars (***see description below), which she would hide from our greedy fingers and enjoy while reading a good Catherine Cookson book late at night. Needless to say, my refined taste buds despised the cheap chocolate of my childhood Easter bunnies, and I eventually gave up and started requesting white chocolate bunnies or even yogourt as a teen (which was quite a luxury back then!).
Spring 1968...my mum and siblings with my beloved Aunt and Uncle...I am still just a twinkle in someone's eye as the saying goes...

One of my favourite Easter memories was the year we boiled up some eggs, dyed them, and rolled them down the small hill on our country property. I remember wishing that I actually liked eggs, because they looked so pretty and I longed to be able to eat one. I do not remember ever doing that before or after, so it sticks out in my mind as special Easter activity.
Decorating eggs...now a yearly tradition.

Fast forward to today, and I enjoy all the pretty traditions associated with Easter. I love putting together a beautiful basket for each child, but deplore the idea of making it into another holiday with the magnitude of Christmas. I remember being in a Walmart store when my children were small and spying a mum with a cart filled with large gifts that she was "putting on lay-away for Easter." I couldn't believe the elaborateness of the gifts and wished someone would relieve her of this misconception that children need to be over-indulged in this way. I like to give my children small seasonally appropriate gifts for Easter, more as a celebration of spring than anything else.

When my sons were small, I always included a new ball cap, sidewalk chalk, bubbles, and perhaps a new pail and shovel for the beach. For my daughter, I usually get her some new sandals or flip flops, a skipping rope, chalk, sunhat, and usually a cheap, but cuddly small bunny as she loves such things. My wistful inner child usually ends up buying her a pretty, new Easter dress to wear to church, despite the weather usually being too unseasonable for such wear...And of course, I buy Cadbury's chocolate eggs and bunnies for my children, as even they don't like the packaged cars and kittens made of the "cheap chocolate". Such snobs are we...!!!

***Fry's Cream is a chocolate bar made by Cadbury's. It consists of a fondant centre wrapped in dark chocolate, and is available in plain, peppermint and orange versions. Fry's Chocolate Cream is one of the oldest chocolate bars, launched in 1866.

On a related note, I remember as a young girl, new to Canada, going on a car drive with my family and stopping for gas. My siblings and I were allowed to go into the store and pick out a treat. Knowing my love of pink, you can only imagine my thrill at spying a pink chocolate bar by the name of "the Pink Panther Bar". I will never forget its pink, creamy goodness with a sweet strawberry flavour and a perfect embossed pink panther that I discovered as I peeled back the wrapper. I remember carefully licking it, so as to preserve that pretty image for as long as I could. I have never tasted anything as good, and I doubt I ever will, as I imagine it would taste sickly sweet to my more adult taste buds, now. Aah...memories!!
